3Motorola SimplefiApr 18, 2010
Contrary to what is said here, this device does work with Windows XP (I have SP3). However getting it to work is a headache. I suspect that this product was manufactured about 8 years ago, my included remote control batteries had an expiration date of 2005.
First off, its $37, so don't expect too much. I actually wanted a Logitech Squeezebox Touch, but noone seemed to know when it would be available. Duet and Sonos systems are expensive.

The Motorola uses its own wireless network, and comes with a transmitter - a symphony usb device from Proxim. Proxim still provides the drivers on their website. So it doesn't tie up your home network. But having two Network adapters really confused my system.

The software installed OK - I actually downloaded the version from Motorola's website, thinking this would be a later version. Didn't use the CD that came with the box. This download is a zipped file. You have to use winzip's extract. You can't just copy the files!

The Simplefi did discover its network, and did connect, but then promptly locked up. Resetting, pulling the power cord, and restarting the simpleware software made no difference. At this point I disabled my antivirus program (Trend Micro Internet security) and disabled all other network connections (in control panel). Magically the Simplefi now starts working! Enabling my home wireless network caused the Simplefi to lock up again. I found I could get around this by manually setting the IP adresses for both the Simplefi and my home network. I'm not a computer geek, but there's enough info on the internet to explain how to manually set IP addresses.

Trend Micro was much more difficult. It just hated Simplefi. Starting the program, even with its firewall switched off, was enough to lock up communication between PC and Simplefi. No amount of adjusting sensitivity settings and allowing 'everything' would permit communication. It seemed that the PC would talk to the Simplefi, but the Simplefi could not talk back. So I gave up with Trend Micro. I downloaded Windows free anti virus software, and that does not cause any problems.

Whole job only took about 5 hours to get going.

Now for the fun part - setting up media manager. This program is terrible. You're supposed to be able to import .m3u playlists. I don't know what program creates these. I use windows media player and a search on my computer did not find any .m3u files. So I had to set all the playlists manually. And when you drag and drop tracks, they get dropped out of order. Typically the first two tracks appear at the end. So you have to move them to reorder them. And very often when dragging and dropping, the drag would pick up something that hadn't been selected and copy that too.

I haven't had much time to determine how good the music quality actually is, and whether tracks sound choppy or get dropped. Initial impressions are favorable. There's only a pair of analogue RCA jacks for the output - no digital. Response time of the remote to the controls seems to be pretty good.
The actual box is a lot smaller than it looks, and it has a nifty removable remote. Don't lose the remote because that's the front panel controls when its docked.
Display is basic - you get 3 lines - channel, playlist title (which I used to enter artist and album) and track title. Even though all my playlists are in alphabetical order in media manager, they don't appear in the same order on the simplefi display. This is a nuisance when trying to find particular albums.

There's supposed to be access to Internet radio stations, but haven't tried this yet.

Like I said, don't expect much for $37. Now having done all the hard work and got the thing going, created all those playlists, as well as reviving my old Dell with windows XP, I might actually buy another one of the things.
