5USB and handheld must be synchedOct 05, 2007
By Celia B. Sinclair
I saw where many had stomped on or tossed out the Presenter 3000 and I was about to join their ranks. Changed out the batteries, only the laser worked, imminently patient husband of mine grew impatient, etc. Then I read about the synching process, from someone in the discussion board, and tried it. Voila. Worked on both computers and worked without re-synching. Then I noticed the "instructions" for such are actually under "Troubleshooting," but it wasn't clear what to do until after I had done it. So, first push the USB button at the top once it's plugged in. I held it on push. Then, push (and hold) the little button on the back of the device. Green lights should flash and you are good to go.

1Comparison MS Presenter 3000 - Logitech Cordless PresenterOct 01, 2007
By M. Nussberger
I am a lecturer who likes to move around freely, i.e. up to a good five meters away from my laptop. I first bought an MS Presenter 3000, without consulting any rewiews, I stumbled over it in the store and on the package a suitable range was promised. I found myself restricted to about 1.5 meters around the laptop for reliable use. I nevertheless used it for some time but got annoyed more and more. I found out that I am not the only person having troubles with this device. So I did not even gave the MS Presenter a second try through replacement, but - before bringing it back for cash refund, to be able to make a 1:1 comparison - I bought a Logitech Cordless 2.4 GHz Presenter for about double the price. It was worth it. With the same batteries, the Logitech Presenter has a reliable range of at least 10 meters.

5Best in kindDec 07, 2006
By Zitty
Sometimes MS does things right... This is a great product; I've tried a few and also own a RemotePoint Global Presenter(2x the price...). Compared to the GP, the Microsoft Presenter wins in all aspects: the laser pointer is much brighter, the mouse controls are much more efficient (with a smart speedup feature), the layout of the buttons is easier to remeber, it's smaller and easier to store in your laptop bag, and also important is that its USB dongle is much smaller (that's very important if your laptop has two USB ports side-by-side, like mine; the GP blocks the use of the second USB port). Plus, it's seen by the OS as a mouse, so there's no SW to install :-)

1Poor build quality, poor performanceJun 02, 2007
By Edwin Olson
I was generally inclined to take the other reviewer's negative comments with a grain of salt. It is often the case, with all respect, that the problems are due to user error, not problems with the device.

Not so, in the case of the microsoft presenter. The feature list is great, and the use of AAA's (rather than button batteries) made it look great on paper. RF, LCD, timer (with vibrating alarm!), mouse. Too bad it couldn't deliver.

It did not work out of the box. My other presenters are easy to use: plug them in and they work (e.g., the Targus presenter, which, alas, lacks mouse.) This device must be "associated" with the USB receiver by simultaneously pressing tiny buttons on both the transmitter and receiver. I had to repeat this process several times too!

But the real show stopper was the range. 4 feet. I'm not kidding. 48 inches. Any further than this and it would start dropping keypresses. 8 feet and nothing would happen at all. Maybe it's interference with 802.11, or cordless phones. Whatever. That's a show stopper for me.

The LCD was also disappointing. It only shows minutes, not seconds.

The receiver does not fit inside the remote, unlike other models. The included case is okay, but the pocket for the receiver seemed to be too small. The laser is adequately bright.

The build quality was also lousy. The buttons jiggle loosely and do not have a good tactile sensation.

There's also a sliding switch on the left that switches between "mouse" mode and "presentation" mode. This means that you can't be in mouse mode and use the laser pointer at the same time, without flipping a switch. I sometimes need mouse control to coax a movie to play, or to interact with an on-screen demo-- and I need the laser pointer too!

5You must first synchronize the USB and the PresenterMar 08, 2010
By Ricky-M
I am a college instructor and I use Powerpoint in just about all my classes. For almost three years, this device left me with nothing but frustration. While the laser pointer is reliable, the slide changer hardly ever works. Replacing the batteries didn't help. I finally gave up on it about an hour ago, concluding it is one more flawed gadget tossed to us unwary consumers. Then I read one of the reviews above that not only recommended synchronizing but also outlined the three steps involved. Here they are:
1. Push the USB button at the top once it's plugged in.
2. Hold it on push.
3. Push (and hold) the little button on the back of the presenter. Green lights should flash and you are good to go. I now have a presenter that really works.
