Allowed me to install 64-bit OS on my old Dell PCMar 04, 2012
By Eric Sternot I have an old Dell machine -- an Optiplex GX280 -- that I am using to learn more about Microsoft Windows Server 2008 in my spare time. I didn't even realize from the specifications or the manual available on Dell's website that this PC's motherboard was 64-bit capable. After upgrading to this processor, seeing that I could then install 64-bit Windows Server 2008 on my Dell Optiplex GX280 was a pleasant surprise. It is one physical processor but acts as two logical processors. With my 64-bit operating system installed, I can now utilize all 4GB of DDR2 random access memory.
I did have some initial trouble. Originally, I had purchased a 3.8GHz Intel Pentium 4 670 SL7Z3 with a 2MB cache and 800MHz FSB; unfortunately, it was not compatible with my Dell Optiplex GX280. In purchasing the Intel Pentium 4 650 SL7Z7, I sacrificed 0.4GHz but still had a processor with a 2MB cache and 800MHz FSB. As previously mentioned, the 650 also afforded me the chance to install a 64-bit OS.
When I purchased it from seller kr_store, it only cost $14.94 + $4.99 shipping and handling. A refurbished one is now available from seller Craving Savings for more than twice the amount that I paid ($34.99 + $4.99 S&H). It's a nice little processor, but by today's standards, it is ancient and has been since the advent of the dual-core processors several years ago. Be careful not to spend too much money on antiquated parts when you can get a new notebook PC with an i3 processor for about $350.
